Banned Picture Books That Are Worth Reading Anyway

Many banned picture books are challenged because they name parts of children's lives that some adults would rather leave unnamed: race, gender, family structure, grief, history, or protest. For children, these books often feel much simpler. They say: you exist, your family counts, and other people's stories are worth knowing.

Julian Is a Mermaid is tender and visually generous. My Rainbow centers Black trans girlhood through family care. The Proudest Blue helps children talk about visible faith, school, and pride.

How to choose

Do not start with controversy. Start with the child. What question are they carrying? What family, body, faith, or history do they need to see handled with care?

Related shelves include picture books about identity, family picture books, and picture books about love.
